Our Scholars
“I am currently a Clinical Research Coordinator, and I am actively pursuing a Ph.D. program in Clinical Psychology. I want to change the stigma around mental health conversation in African and African-American communities, especially mental health conversations as they center on Black women.”
“This foundation encourages me to push myself. I’ve always been an introvert, but this team is so different. Our time together can begin talking about anything, but often ends up in a deep conversation about real fears and struggles in our lives.”
“I currently work as a Portfolio Risk Analyst, as a Software Engineering Intern for an innovative website. I enjoy learning languages, not only because it helps me travel, but because it aids my international career prospects. I’d eventually love a position abroad where my software and analytics knowledge can directly aid those with socioeconomic disadvantages.”
“Take Charge is as much about the community as it is about the scholarship amount. Getting to spend so much time with the team and the other Scholars and sharing stories has created something that lasts longer than 4 years.”
“Most scholarships only require a certain GPA, there is no personal or other involvement. Take Charge is different because they push the envelope. They really care about their students. Our well beings and goals. They desire to set us up for success in all areas of our lives.”
“Take Charge employs a holistic approach to promoting scholars' growth. Everyone at Take Charge is committed to helping us remain academically solid, physically well, and emotionally supported.”
“The network provided by the Take Charge foundation helped carry me through college and honestly saved my life. If you are looking for a long-term family, this is the place to be.”
“Come as yourself. Be who you are. There is no single model of who a Battier Scholar is.”
“It’s a scholarship on paper, a family in real life. I’m taken aback that I get to be a part of it, part of the family. I’ve never been more grateful.”
“I work every day to improve myself and to be a better person. I plan to go to medical school after I graduate. My ultimate goal is to offer free health clinics in the future, in order to benefit those in my community who cannot afford health insurance.”
“I was recently accepted into the BSN Program at Oakland, a very academically competitive with limited enrollment. It was not an easy path, and I could not have done it without the support of my Take Charge Family. They have given me a foundation to leap up from, and I’m ready to fly!”
“Take Charge definitely isn’t “just another scholarship.” They want me to grow, and I know I can own my experience.”
“As a Battier Scholar, you get to be around people who want to know you, want to know what you’re doing, and support you. You get to be around people who are family.”
“In the Fall of 2019, I concluded my 4-year soccer career at McMurry University. Now I am fully charged and focused on completing the last year of my BSN-RN. I hope to gain enough experience so I can go back to graduate school and get my MSN in Nursing, and eventually become a Nurse Practitioner.”
“Because of the foundation, I’m now privileged. This is the leg up that we Scholars didn’t expect, but now we get to have. Take Charge wants to stick around for life – and I’m welcoming it!”
